The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOT) Tokyo's collection dates back to 1926, when the Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum was established in Ueno Park. Over the years, the collection grew to approximately 3,000 art pieces, which were passed on to the MOT when it opened. Today, the collection comprises of over 5,700 works from Japan and abroad and is known as the 'MOT Collection'.
The museum's collection is not only a reflection of historical postwar art, but also presents current trends in art through a collection of works by young artists. The focus of the collection is on pioneering works that created innovative trends in different periods. Collecting and preserving these works is fundamental to the museum's activities.
The 'MOT Collection' exhibitions are held three to four times annually in the museum's Collection Gallery. Each exhibition is based on a unique theme and showcases between 100 and 200 works from the extensive collection.
