The Shiseido Gallery is thought to be Japan's oldest art gallery still in operation. It opened in 1919 and has run as a non-profit ever since, hosting over 3,100 exhibitions. Many of these served to introduce new and influential artists to Japan's art scene. The gallery now hosts rotating exhibits with a focus on contemporary art, including both solo and group exhibits, all of which are free to enter and enjoy.
Run by the famous Shiseido cosmetic company, the gallery's five-meter ceiling allows extensive exhibitions. Tall and bright red, the building was designed by famed Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, and boldly stands out from its surroundings. Its prime Ginza location is perfect for those looking for an afternoon of designer shopping and gallery hopping.
