Shitamachi Tanabata Matsuri

Shitamachi Tanabata Matsuri

The Shitamachi Tanabata Matsuri, held annually on July 7th, is a vibrant festival in Tokyo's Shitamachi districts that celebrates the Star Festival and Japan's rich cultural heritage.

The festival's origin lies in the ancient legend of the Weaver Princess and the Cowherd, who were only allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

During the festival, streets are adorned with colorful decorations like paper streamers (tanzaku) and bamboo ornaments. Visitors can enjoy traditional food, games, and captivating performances.

The festival takes place in Tokyo's Shitamachi districts, including Asakusa, Ueno, and Kappabashi, known for their traditional atmosphere and strong sense of community.
